when k & r reached out to me to start planning my role in their elopement I immediately knew it was going to be an intentional day full of memory-making moments. from the bouquet and boutonniere that they made together with flowers from @traderjoes and the unity candle from @soothing_ways where they had their first date to the use of orchids throughout the day every part of this winter morning was true to their love story 💛
one of my favorite parts of this job is getting to know my couples and learning about their vision for their wedding day. it’s never the same for, but it’s always a magical mix of their past and their future ✨
k & r also taught me about the significane of orchirds in queer history. the flower was an omnipresent part of their day.
from the 1640s to late 1940s the golden orchid society was a prevalent organization in south china. it served as a safe space for queer women - in addition to heterosexual women against marriage - and was in many ways a rebellion against societal norms. while there were, of course, nuances to this group, the most important takeaway from this information is that we, queer people, have always been around. the lgbtqia+ community has always existed, and it always will. we are powerful because we have survived and, even in the current political climate, we will continue to thrive.
